Norway
Wilma van de Veen
Wilma van de Veen is a physical therapist from Trondheim, Norway. She has been working with lymphedemapatients at St. Olavs hospital, the University Hospital, since 1997, but retired this summer. She accepted to representant Norway in the European Lipedema Association, in a transition position with Hildur Skuladottir, plastic surgean from Bergen, alongside.
She has been leader for the organisation “Physical Therapists working with cancer and lymphedemapatients” , part of the National Organisation for Physical Therapists in Norway.
Over the years lipedemapatients became of special interest for her and she became active in several activities to give the disease a name: lectures, cooperation with clinical nutrition therapists and the obesity clinic, teaching fellow colleagues, plastic surgeans and so on. She translated the article Lipoedema- myths and facts. Part 5, customized it to Norwegian reality and had it published on the patients website (jan. 2020). It noticeably lead to a shift in mind-set of patients and therapists.
In the hospital she offered standardised diagnostic sessions and gave advise to therapists and doctors about follow up. Therapists at the hospital now offer follow up consults about lifestyle changes and selv management. She also started aqua gymnastics. Psychological follow up is lacking, so does liposuction, but ”Lærings- og mestringskurs”, an interdisciplinary course meant to empower patients by giving them knowledge about their disease and encourage self management, is build up.
In Norway the interest for lipedema is growing and to bigger studies are sett up: one related to lipedema and nutrition and one about lipedema and liposuction.
But there still is a very long way to go. Most doctors know nothing or very little about lipedema. Even if diagnosed and treated for lipedema, there is not a standard approach. Not even rules about what is being paid for by the National Health Insurance is similar all over the country and patients frustration is very understandable. National guidelines for diagnostics and treatment are very much needed. Maybe international guidelines might be of help.
